“Perception is reality.”

A well-coined phrase… and a misnomer.

Perception isn’t reality – it’s a personal interpretation of reality.

Your reality is strictly your own.

None of us experience reality as it really is.

As Rabbi Shemuel ben Nachmani observed all the way back in the third century, “We don’t see things as they are, we see things as we are”.

In other words, how we see the world is shaped by our current beliefs about it.

You’re prejudiced. We all are.

We all carry preconceived ideas we’ve accepted critically about ourselves, our worthiness, our potential and what is possible for us in our business, career and life.

The problem there?

Well, for a start we’re rarely, if ever, conscious of our beliefs and how they taint our world view: meaning we’re rarely aware of how the warped lens by which we encounter life hinders objectivity.

And that’s before recognising the beliefs driving our perspectives are mostly, if not entirely, inherited. We didn’t originate the vast majority (if not all) of the ideas driving how we look at life and our experience of it.

You’ll have a perception of Coaching that can almost guarantee – unless you’ve read-up, been formally trained, educated and qualified in the subject, is wholly inaccurate.

I know this because of experience. I’ve trained more Coaches to the highest standards in this profession than any other individual or any other Coach training school, and invariably, the overwhelming majority had a false concept of what Coaching is.

Clearly, if you’re to enjoy a richly rewarding career in this profession, you can’t afford to not be suitably trained and qualified.

And you certainly do not want to join the multitude of individuals who knowingly or unknowingly violate this profession and the public they claim to serve by claiming to provide a service you are not capable of providing, let alone qualified to provide.

What most people consider Coaching, isn’t.

And we pay an enormous price for our ignorance.

Coaching is the most transformational process known to mankind, but very few people, including the vast majority of the profession’s practitioners, recognise it and know it as such.

Put it this way: no other intervention has the same transformative qualities and abilities than the Coaching process.

Not traditional forms of teaching (a Coach is a teacher), not training, not mentoring, not consulting.

As I reveal in The Iconic Coach: Become a Highly Sought After Expert in Transformation™ (a training you can join the waiting list to join by visiting the ‘Resources” area at https://christian-simpson.com), the gross misconception of Coaching is rooted in the traditional view of a typical “sports coach” – who is not a Coach at all, but a technical expert who teaches, shares expertise or experience with the less experienced players in his or her care.

There are a few exceptions – a small minority who’ve come to the awareness that Tim Gallway discovered during the experience which led to his groundbreaking book The Inner Game of Tennis – but in the main, a sports coach is a traditional teacher, trainer and mentor…

not a Coach.

Bottom line?

As I also reveal in The Iconic Coach: Become a Highly Sought After Expert in Transformation™

  • A Coach does not give advice
  • A Coach does not teach content
  • A Coach does not direct or give instruction
  • A Coach does not give answers or offer solutions
  • And a Coach does not share experience

Why?

Because no one has to think when given answers.

And the belief systems driving the habitual ways we think and act into our lives – the ultimate architect of our current conditions and circumstances – remain untouched and unmodified.

As T.Harv Eker put it so perfectly in his book The Millionaire Mind , if you want to change the fruits you have to change the roots.

There are rare – and I do mean rare – instances when a Coach may offer up an experience for context, but it’s done in a certain way to ensure the participant is still thinking into their own outcomes.

Which brings us to this: if you hire someone claiming to be a Coach, and they freely or quickly do any of the above, stop working with that individual immediately – they are, at best, professionally negligent and at worst, utterly incompetent.

In my next article, I’ll describe how, in a marketplace swilling with untrained, unqualified, unfit-for-purpose individuals claiming to be Coaches,   you ensure you’re working with the real deal who is capable of bringing the transformative impact of the true Coaching process to you, your business and your life.
